The Charlotte community has an impressive history with Blue Cross Blue Shield’s Winter Warm Up program. For years, participants from Charlotte have kept the city at or near the top of the standings of a friendly competition that pitted area communities against each other in a quest to log the most miles.
That competition though, has run its course. Charlotte’s participation with the Winter Warm Up program, however, has not.
This year’s event has taken the form of the Blue Cross Community Couch to 5K and kicks off this Saturday, Jan. 16 at 9 a.m. at the Lansing Mall. The eight-week program offers free weekly training sessions with certified Good Form Running and Walking Coaches from the Playmakers Fitness Foundation. The training sessions will prepare participants for the free 5K walk/run event planned for March 12 at Hawk Island in Lansing.
“The whole family is invited to learn about new ways to stay healthy and fit through the cold Michigan winter,” said Christina Campbell, AL!VE Operations Coordinator.
AL!VE will serve as the local site for free training sessions, which will take place Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., beginning Monday, Jan. 18.
“Those sessions are not mandatory, but are free,” Campbell said. “Additionally, any participant will receive weekly e-newsletters with training and nutrition info.”
