A new Michigan nonprofit is making a difference by connecting Veterans, active-duty service members, Gold Star Families and First Responders with the healing power of the outdoors.
Next Mission Outdoors was founded on the belief that time spent in nature can do more than provide recreation – it can help people heal, reconnect and build lasting friendships. Through hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, and other outdoor adventures, the organization creates opportunities for participants to step away from the stresses of daily life and find encouragement among others who understand their experiences.
Nick Heisler, a board member with Next Mission Outdoors, from Olivet, recently shared the organization’s mission and vision for the future.
“Our goal is to provide meaningful outdoor experiences that promote healing, resilience, integrity and camaraderie,” Heisler said. “Whether someone is a Veteran, active-duty service member, Gold Star Family member or First Responder, we want them to know they have a community that understands them and is ready to welcome them.”
Research has shown that spending time outdoors can have significant mental and physical health benefits. Activities such as fishing, hiking, and hunting can help reduce stress, improve mood, encourage physical activity, and create opportunities for meaningful conversations.
For many Veterans and First Responders who have experienced high-stress careers, time in nature offers a chance to unwind, reconnect with others, and simply enjoy moments of peace away from everyday pressures.
Heisler shared that Next Mission Outdoors has already begun organizing outings across Michigan, including fishing outings, hunting excursions, hiking adventures and camping experiences.
As the organization grows, they hope to expand these opportunities and reach even more individuals who could benefit from the fellowship and restoration found outdoors. The nonprofit’s motto—”Heal. Belong. Reignite.”—captures its commitment to helping participants discover purpose, friendship and renewed hope through outdoor recreation.
The organization is also preparing for its Annual Banquet Fundraiser on Saturday, Aug. 1, at the Warren FOP Hall. The evening will feature a walleye dinner, raffles, prizes and fundraising activities, with proceeds supporting outdoor programs for Veterans and First Responders.
Those interested in learning more about upcoming outings, volunteer opportunities, or ways to support the organization are encouraged to follow the Next Mission Outdoors Facebook page.
