The Eaton Rapids Historical Society is inviting the community to celebrate America’s 250th birthday during Fun on the Farm on Saturday, Aug. 15, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Miller Farm Museum complex, 635 State St.

The event is part of the Historical Society’s growing effort to bring more families and visitors to its seven-acre historic campus through special events that showcase both local history and community spirit. 

The Events Committee has been working to expand programming that highlights the museum’s unique collection of historic buildings and exhibits.

This year’s celebration offers something for every age. Visitors can watch historic reenactors throughout the grounds, including Benjamin Franklin, who will read the Declaration of Independence. 

Other attractions include a quilt show in the historic Plains Road Church, children’s tractor pulls, an ice cream toss, a cornhole tournament beginning at 11 a.m., a silent auction, and a local antique roadshow presented by Russells Relics from 1 to 3 p.m., where visitors can learn more about the history and value of treasured heirlooms. 

Live music by the local band Baseline will fill the grounds from 2 to 5 p.m., while food vendors will offer hot dogs, chili dogs, chicken salad sandwiches, baked goods, and other treats. 

The farm’s popular historic ice cream parlor will also be open throughout the day.

Guests are encouraged to explore the Miller Farm’s many historic attractions, including the Miller Home and Barn, the Plains Road Church, the one-room country schoolhouse, and the Jean Bradford Kline Block, a remarkable recreation of Eaton Rapids’ Main Street at the turn of the century.

The event reflects the Historical Society’s broader mission to preserve and share the community’s heritage. 

Throughout the year, the organization hosts monthly summer open houses, welcomes elementary students for country school programs each spring, and presents seasonal favorites such as Halloween and Christmas on the Farm.

Leading these efforts are board members Doreen Baker, Nancy Smith, Deb Mack, and Jill Skinner, along with board president Mike Baker, and a dedicated team of volunteers. The organization hopes to continue growing its membership and volunteer base while encouraging more residents to discover one of Eaton Rapids’ historical treasures.

Community support has played an important role in making Fun on the Farm possible.

Several local businesses have generously sponsored activities and prizes, helping to keep most events free to the public, with concessions available for purchase.

Whether you’re interested in history, music, antiques, family activities, or simply a relaxing afternoon on the farm, Fun on the Farm celebrates both Eaton Rapids’ heritage and the nation’s 250th birthday.
