John A. Simpson

John Arthur Simpson, 90, died peacefully on Monday, September 20, 2021 at his home in Charlotte surrounded by family. John was born February 1, 1931 in Roxand Twp., the son of Kenneth and Eathel (Boyer) Simpson. He graduated from Charlotte High School in 1950, and married Phyllis Barney on August 29, 1954, at Gresham United Methodist Church.
John devoted his life to family, his community, and farming. John and Phyllis loved their farm, where they lived since 1963. They raised three children there, and it has been a beloved home for their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren who visited as often as they could for fish fries, hunting, or ice cream. John regularly attended and faithfully supported the church where he and Phyllis were married. He was a hardworking, honest, and generous man who set an example of lifelong love and respect for his family and all who knew him.
John started farming in 1950, working the land for 68 years, before finally retiring in 2018. It was a source of pride that his son, Wayne, farmed with him for the last several years. In addition to farming, he and Phyllis built a good business selling Pioneer Seeds for 40 years. With his father, and later his son, John spent over 25 years building bean headers for harvesting navy beans. He also worked he at Fascut Tools from 1955 to 1961.
The couple were well-known in the community for their contributions. John served in volunteer capacities, including five years as a 4-H leader, 10 years on the Chester Township Board of Review, 21 years on the Eaton County Soil Conservation Board of which he served as Secretary, the Farm Service Agency Board. He was a member of Farm Bureau since 1950 and volunteered for many projects and activities with that organization.
Together, John and Phyllis were inducted into the Michigan Farmers Hall of Fame in 2002. John received many other awards and recognitions along the way, including Conservationist of the Year from the Thornapple Grand Soil Conservation District, and the Distinguished Service to Agriculture Award from Eaton County Farm Bureau.
When not on the farm, Phyllis and John loved to travel – often on farm tours or with friends – and they were proud to say that they had been to all 50 states. They traveled together, with their kids and grandkids, taking each of the grandkids to Disney World. John enjoyed fishing and hunting, especially a week or two of deer camp with brothers and friends every year.
John is survived by his three children, Marilyn (Stanley) Marshall, Wayne (Sandy) Simpson, Diane Enterline; grandchildren, Angel Andrews, Kathleen Marshall, Samantha (Lam Pham) Marshall, Josh (Lindsay) Simpson, Jason Ross, Josh Ross, and Jeff Ross; great-grandchildren, Kalli (Matt) Mongar, Kadence Andrews, James Pham; great-great-granddaughter, Aubree Mongar; siblings, Marvel Weers, Max (Sandy) Simpson, Lois (Ken) Klumpp, Albert (Jaynne) Simpson, and Roy (Krys) Simpson; siblings-in-law, Louise (Richard) Todd, Leonard (Bonnie) Barney. He was predeceased by his wife of nearly 64 years, Phyllis Jean Simpson; beloved grandson, Clifford Marshall; son-in-law, Sheldon Enterline; and brother-in-law, Clifford LaMarr Weers.
The funeral service were held outdoors in the Pray Funeral Home Gardens on Friday, September 24, at 1 p.m. with Pastor Bryce Feighner officiating. Interment will take place in Gresham Cemetery alongside Phyllis. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Lansing, Charlotte FFA, or Eaton County 4-H. Tressie E. Hotchkiss

Tressie Emily Hotchkiss, a woman who believed that you have two hands, one for you and one for helping others, died at the age of 99 on September 22, 2021 with many hands holding hers in her last few weeks and months. Tressie was a beloved resident at Hope Landing who suffered from dementia. She was born on a farm near Homer, Michigan on May 6, 1922 to Floyd and Bessie (Face) Stanham. After high school she moved to Lansing to take a business course, and worked several years for Fisher Body in Lansing. Tressie married Owen Hotchkiss of Marshall on June 1, 1946, and when they started their family, she stayed home to be a homemaker. They enjoyed many years of leading 4-H clubs, working on the farm and square dancing. Also a talented seamstress, Tressie made lots of clothing for her family over the years. Tressie volunteered at Hayes Green Beach Hospital in Charlotte for over 20 years and was also a member of the Senior Center in Charlotte. In her free time, she loved watching Tigers Baseball and MSU Spartans football and basketball, was a staunch Euchre player and she and Owen enjoyed John’s racing career.
Tressie is survived by her children, John Hotchkiss (and racing family), Debbie (Darrel) Gingrich, and Karen (Tim) Mikesell; grandchildren, Kim (Tim) Otto, Heather (Kyle) Young, Chelsea (Ryan) Wixson, and Garrett Mikesell; four great-grandsons, Bryce, Brock, Nolan and Grady; sister, Ruth Hamilton; and brother-in-law, Marvin (Susie) Hotchkiss. She was preceded in death by her husband, Owen, in December 2000; and brother, Lloyd Stanham. The family would like to thank all the staff at Hope Landing and the nurses at Hospice of Lansing for their excellent care and concern during this difficult time.

Norma Kay Hoag of Springport, passed away on Saturday, September 18, 2021 at the age of 78. Kay was born on July 5, 1943 in Eaton Rapids, to Lanson and Frances (Thumie) Tilford. She was raised on her family farm in Springport where she attended school, leaving early to start a family only to return to school where she received her diploma in 1969. Kay worked for the Springport School district for 33 years as a bus driver while also working on her own family farm. She always had an open door at her house, and it was usually filled with children from the neighborhood. Kay was an active member of 4H in her youth, a longtime member of Springport Methodist Church and always loved being outdoors and enjoying nature’s beauties.
She is preceded in death by her parents, mother and father-in-law, Alonzo and Velma Hoag; brothers-in-law, Carl, Bill, Gene, Dick, Johnny and Wayne Hoag.
Kay is survived by her husband, Jerry Hoag; children, Terry (Sidney “Jim” Keupper) Adamski, Carl (Sue) Hoag; grandchildren, Carlee Hoag, John Hoag, Jerry Hoag; brothers, Clayton (Nancy) Tilford, Richard “Dick” (Margaret) Hisler; sister, Sharon (Carl) Lincoln and numerous nieces and nephews.

Marlene Grace Waterson of Mason, passed away on September 20, 2021 at the age of 79. Marlene was born in Jackson, Mich., on August 8, 1942, the daughter of Charles and Dorothy (Vian) Herrick. She went back to school and graduated from Bear Lake High School in 1992 alongside her daughter, Michelle. Marlene learned sign language on her own and was an interpreter for those in need. She was an awesome baker and cook, enjoyed sewing and canning.
Marlene is survived by her children, Sharon Chandler of Harrietta, Mich., Mark Wilhelm of Lansing, Michelle Jones of Copemish, Mich., Aaron Wilhelm of Mesick, Mich., Lloyd Wilhelm of Cadillac; 14 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; siblings, Doretta Isaac, Beverly Mannor, Raymond Herrick, James Herrick. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Aaron Waterson; brother-in-law, Neal Isaac.

Ray Arthur Darnell of Eaton Rapids, passed away September 6, 2021, at the age of 67. Ray was born in Howell, Mich., January 8, 1954, the son of Clarence and Lillian (Bunker) Darnell. He worked for DecraLac and Fast Eddies in Holt. Ray was an avid outdoorsman enjoying camping, snowmobiling, fishing, hunting, watching NASCAR and westerns. He especially loved spending time with his grandchildren.
Ray is survived by his fiancé, Brenda Lee Richardson; children, Ray, Jenny, Bruce and Mark Darnell; step-children, Robert, Paul, Caleb (Kalynn), Jason (Amanda), Cody (Alyssa) Richardson and Heidi (Rod) Pyers; nine grandchildren; brother, Ronald Darnell; sisters, Lois (Dave) Clark, Karen Roebuck and Ila (Larry) Collins; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Kenny.

Dennis Jerome Lawhead of Eaton Rapids, passed away surrounded by his beloved family on September 18, 2021, at the age of 73. Dennis was born in Lansing, June 25, 1948, the son of Duane and Irma Gayle (Walker) Lawhead. He graduated from Grand Ledge High School in 1967 and went on to proudly serve with the US Army until his retirement in 1989. Dennis continued his employment as a corrections officer retiring in 2011 after 20 years. He was a member of the Masonic Temple in Eaton Rapids and Charlotte, the American Legion in Jackson and a lifetime member of the NRA. Dennis enjoyed riding his Harley Motorcycle, hunting and fishing. He was an amazing father and beloved husband and will be greatly missed.
Dennis is survived by his wife, Olivia Lawhead; children, Danah (Chris) Klinger of Georgia, Desi (Seth) Sohn of Wisconsin, Dennis (Christina) Lawhead Jr. of Kalkaska; grandchildren, Emily, Carlina, Clara, Max, Oscar and Juniper; brother, David Lawhead of Onstead; sister, Dorothy Parsley of Florida; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Jack Swan.

Sandra Kay Eggleston, 68, of Charlotte, died Saturday, September 11, 2021, in Lansing, surrounded by her family. Sandra was born October 31, 1952, in Charlotte, the daughter of Albert and Nellie (Johnson) Brandon. She graduated from Charlotte High School in 1971, and the next week married Billy Eggleston on June 19, 1971. Shortly after, the two started their family with the birth of their son, Keith. Sandra worked many years as a grill cook, at the Eaton Place, Big Boy, and the County Gavel, as well as working at Mickey’s Party Store. She and Billy enjoyed bowling together on their Friday night league, and Sandra also played softball. She loved to cook, not only on the job, but baking cookies for her family, especially grandchildren. Sandra cherished her grandchildren, and her family.
Sandra is survived by her husband of 50 years, Billy Douglas Eggleston; son, Keith LaVerne Eggleston and his significant other, Heather Collins; daughter, Rose Marie Eggleston and her fiancé Devrin Beebe; four grandchildren, Amber (Ian) Nichols, Blake Peffer, Brandon Eggleston, and Jamie Collins; and her sister, Ruth Lawcock. She was predeceased by her parents and her siblings, Virginia Potter, Albert “Vern” Brandon, Mary Myers, Robert Brandon, Glen Brandon, Dixie Weaver, Donald Brandon, Ronald Brandon.

Harriett Mae Tarnowski, age 85, of Charlotte, formerly of Henderson, Nev., and Metro-Detroit, passed away peacefully into the arms of her Savior on Saturday, September 11, 2021. She was born October 6, 1935, in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania the daughter of William and Loretta (Barker) Dowling. Harriett was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She was always concerned about the needs of others and did her best to see that everyone was well cared for. She enjoyed bowling, canning, and working as a server in several high-end restaurants. Her family always loved her spaghetti sauce, chili, stuffed porkchops, and honey baked ham. Harriett was a devoted Christian and enjoyed serving others. She was a member of the Henderson United Methodist Church in Henderson, Nevada and attended Calvary Baptist Church in Charlotte.
Harriett is survived by her children, Laura (Robert) Vipond of Charlotte, John (Debra) Tarnowski of Cal., Loretta (Glenn) Bouse of Ypsilanti; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sister, Laura Rademacher of Miss.; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joseph Tarnowski; daughter, Mary Young; siblings, Betty Lewis, Loretta (Orin) Rush, William Dowling Jr.; brother-in-law, Melvin Rademacher; and sister-in-law, Marcie Dowling.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, September 16, 2021 at Calvary Baptist Church with Pastors Tim Potter and Mark Booth officiating. The family received friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial took place at Parkview Memorial Park in Livonia.

Irene Jewett, of Duck Lake, Springport, Mich., our loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother went home to be with her Lord on Saturday, September 11, 2021, after a brave fight with lung cancer.
Irene was born August 6, 1937, in Grand Rapids, Mich., the daughter of Howard and Ruth (Davis) Hill. She resided in Charlotte for 68 years after moving here at age 15. She proudly and loyally served her community as City Clerk for 31 years, until retiring. After retirement she joined her beloved husband traveling and causing fish to tremble in fear in numerous lakes, oceans, and states around the country.
She was a member of the Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church. Her generosity and caring spirit showed in her love for many family members and friends. She held a special place in her heart for her six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, with whom she practiced her favorite hobby of gift giving. Many family members, friends, and those in the community sought her wise advice and counsel.
Surviving are her children, Greg (Corinne) Cooper, Shelley (Denny) Hagman, Rob (Karry) Jewett, Kelly (Mark) Wojtysiak, Andrea Jewett; grandchildren, Lindsey (Josh) Buckner, Brad Hagman, Cody (Brittany) Cooper, Kyli (Josh) Logsdon, Elizabeth Wojtysiak, Jordan Jewett; great-grandchildren, Dylan Buckner, Braylan Buckner, Cason Cooper and Kinzley Logsdon; brother, Mark (Robin) Lapham; and brother-in-law, Dan (Lisa) Driessen.
Irene was preceded in death by her loyal and loving husband of 40 years, Bob Jewett; her parents; sisters, Joan Frankowski and Helen Driessen.
In keeping with Irene’s wishes cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at a later date.
