Charlene Candice Moore, age 91, an eternal optimist and center of her family, died on Thanksgiving morning, November 28, 2019, in Petoskey. Born in Potterville on July 31, 1928, to Ray and Bonnie (Bramble) Laverty, Charlene grew up there and graduated from Potterville High School in 1946. She married Donald Moore and worked at Michigan Bell as an operator until they expanded their family. A few years later, she returned to work at AT&T at their switch station in Charlotte, retiring with 32 years of service. Over the years, Charlene enjoyed lots of activities in the Charlotte community, including membership at the Charlotte Country Club (where she had a hole in one), bowling and dancing with Don. Charlene and Donald loved to travel to Bradenton, FL in the winters after their retirement.
Charlene is survived by her daughters, Candace (Ron) Karr of Petoskey and Connie Burgess; 9 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Donald, in 2013; and her son, Rocco Moore, in 2007.

Bette Eileen Emede of Vestaburg, age 96 — our loving mother, grandma, great-grandma and great-great-grandma — passed away peacefully surrounded by family on November 27, 2019. Bette was born to Harold and Flossie May (Bohner) Convis on December 23, 1922, in Lansing. Bette was a graduate of Lansing Eastern High School. Bette was the beloved wife of Gerald Emede for over 57 years and the mother of five children. She was well-loved and cared for until the end.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Harold and William Convis, husband Gerald Page Emede, son Gary Emede, daughter Susan Hendrick and her grandson James John Emede.
Surviving are her children; Cheryl Sage Emede, William (Julie) Emede, and James Dean (Denise) Emede; sister-in-Law Sharon Emede, and daughter-in-law Linda Emede, grandchildren; Natalie Sage (Martin) Petermann, Thomas Emede, Stacy (Luke) McGarry, Jake (Kami) Emede, Jordan (Jasmine) Emede, Urian and Jeremy Spotts, Roger and Travis Smith; great-grandchildren Saige Petermann, Ryder, Kason and Max McGarry, Cheyenne Emede, Preston Spotts, Kaelyn Welsh, Aliya Agnello and Ashton Smith, Tobias, Holden, Brody, Jayden, Trey and Jocelyn Smith; great-great-grandchildren Hayden and Sabrina Emede, and special family friend Amanda McQueen.

Barry Kurt Janetzke, a hard-working handy man, died on November 28, 2019, at the age of 67. Barry was born to Reinhold and Mary Lou (Jolliff) Janetzke in Lansing on July 9, 1952. On June 6, 1980, Barry married his love, Tammy (Durbin) Janetzke. He earned his degree in skilled trades and was proud of the awards he earned during his time spent as a laser operator at General Motors. Barry was known for being precise and thorough in his work, which is a skill that he passed on to his children. Always frugal, Barry did his research on items before purchasing them and preferred American-made products.
A big kid at heart, Rock & Roll lover, Barry, prioritized spending time with his family. He was a super dad who had fun camping, swimming at Lake Michigan and enjoying the sand dunes. Barry is survived by his wife, Tammy; their children, Jamison Janetzke, Aaron (Mandy) Janetzke, Travis (Dawn) Heinze, Michael (Christina) Janetzke, and Regan Janetzke; grandchildren, Tara, Alex, Lauren, Devin, Logan and Brayden; granddog, Sophia; mother, Mary Lou Janetzke; siblings, Rev. Doug (Marguerite) Janetzke, Randy (Sue) Janetzke, Phillip Janetzke, Shari (Terry) Roe; and sister-in-law, Debbie Parish. Barry was preceded in death by his father, Reinhold Janetzke; and daughter-in-law, Stefanie Janetzke.

Neil G. “Pete” Isham, age 94, of Albion, peacefully passed away in the comfort and company of family at Maplewood of Marshall on Monday, December 2, 2019, after a long and rewarding life.
Pete was born on February 9, 1925, at the family’s home on a farm near Dowling to Howard and Sarah (Hammond) Isham. He attended Hastings High School. Like many young men of his generation, he chose to enlist on June 16, 1943, in the military to serve his country, choosing the U.S. Navy. He served as part of a U.S. naval detachment assigned to merchant marine ships to provide protection when those ships were attacked. He traveled both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans during the latter part of the war. He was honorably discharged on March 12, 1946.
Upon returning home, he was uncertain of what he wanted to do and worked a variety of jobs. Neil attended Michigan State University’s forestry program. He earned his certificate in forestry and went to work for Smith Tree Service and Landscaping in Lansing. Through this work, he connected with the Consumers Power Company of the era (now Consumers Energy) and went to work for them.
Pete worked as an industrial meterman — repairing, maintaining, replacing and installing meters on larger customers for Consumers. He worked with them for 36 years, retiring in 1987.
Pete was married on February 27, 1948, to Zeatha Dolena “Dolly” Isham. They moved to Albion in 1956. In 1956, they began construction of their family home in Albion, where they spent their lives together. Dolly was from Canada, and she always enjoyed time there with her family, which may be what inspired Pete to dedicate a week a year for some personal solitude, canoeing and fishing with his sons or friends. Family reunions for Dolly’s side of the family were attended regularly in Sand Bay, Ontario, and later at Sylvan Shores Estate near Cheboygan, MI. Neil’s love of the outdoors was fulfilled with these trips — canoeing and kayaking, fishing and camping. Pete and Dolly worked as campground hosts after their retirement. They did this at Pictured Rocks National Park in northern Michigan and Junction Creek USFS Campground near Durango, CO. Dolly preceded Pete in death on March 7, 2018. They celebrated 70 years of marriage together.
He was a member of the Patrick Leo Hanlon Post 55 of the American Legion. Pete was a long-time member of the Caring Community Church.
He is survived by his sons, Michael (Don) Isham, Brian (Barbara) Isham, Gary (Terry) Isham, and Mark (Christine) Isham; his daughter-in-law Joan Isham; and a “adopted by the family” son Gary (Debbie) Christner; nine grandchildren, Jason Isham, Alyssa James, Anne Kuhns, Will Ferguson, Casey Ferguson, Allison Isham, Matthew Isham, Erika Isham, and Josh Isham; two great-grandchildren Kiera Isham and Zadie James; and many nieces and nephews.
Pete was preceded in death by his parents, a son Scott Isham, a granddaughter Laura Isham, and his brothers Merrill Isham, Garrett Isham and Caryl W. Isham.

Donald Fletcher Cogswell, a man who loved to laugh and always had a joke to share, died December 4, 2019, at the age of 81. Don was born in Charlotte on May 13, 1938, to Leman and Thelma (Diamond) Cogswell, and lived in the Charlotte area his entire life. After graduating from Charlotte High School, he worked for GM for 38 years as a millwright and also enlisted in the National Guard.
A very loving, caring, and wonderful husband, father, and friend to many, Don will be missed dearly in his community. Known as a regular for morning coffee at McDonalds, and exercising at the Wellness Center, many will remember Don best for dressing up as Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny to pass out candy canes and jelly beans in front of his home. An avid Detroit Tigers fan, he not only enjoyed watching the team play, but also loved buying Tigers and baseball memorabilia on eBay.
Donald is survived by his wife of 43 years, Donna; daughters, Tammy (Daniel) Crandell and Dawn Andrews; sons, Donald Todd Cogswell and Bill (Sara) Andrews; 10 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and his beloved dog, Pier; and cat, Romeo.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Leman and Thelma Cogswell; and brothers, Richard and Gary Cogswell.
Friends are encouraged to support Don’s family.  Funeral services are Tuesday, December 10, 2019, at 2 p.m. at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte with Pastor Charles Krueger officiating. Lennis D. Sanders of Mason, and formerly of Eaton Rapids, passed away on Wednesday, December 4, 2019, at the age of 84. Lennis was born on March 10, 1935, in Eaton Rapids Township, the son of Jay and Norene (Potter) Sanders. He proudly served as a Corporal in the U.S. Army in Korea. Lennis worked as a welder and mechanic at numerous companies throughout his lifetime including: Allied Steel, Springport Steel, Holt Metal, Sunoco, Meijer, Warner and Swasey, Eaton Lumber, VFW National Home, Mergener Printing, and then retiring from General Motors in 1999. He was a loving and caring soul who could strike up a conversation and make friends with anyone. Lennis was a man who loved to laugh, loved the Lord, and above all loved his family and cherished the time he spent with them. He was a master of grilled chicken, donuts and pancakes.
He is preceded in death by his parents, brother Bruce; sisters-in-law Virginia and Sharie. Lennis is survived by his wife of 62 years, Lauralee (Olney) Sanders; his children, Nancy Wilson, Sheila (Paul) Pawlowski, Teresa (Rusty) Hawley, Mark (Mary) Sanders, Linette (Bill) Silvernail; 16 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren; siblings, Richard Sanders, Ralph (Linda) Sanders, Clair Sanders, Esther (Dean) Shrontz; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

On November 30, 2019, the world lost a kind and gentle man who always put others ahead of himself. He was a man who, above all else, loved life and family, especially his wife of 76 years, Nina. Chuck’s life included many occupations. His favorite was the years he spent as bellman and then Superintendent of Service at the Grand Hotel and the Seaview Hotel in Miami. He ran a multi-location poultry business with his brother Dick and father Ray. In later years, he was an investment advisor.
While his various jobs were important, his heart was more into his love of the outdoors — sailing his boat, The Nina, on the Great Lakes, inland Michigan lakes and waterways from Florida to Canada. Chuck enjoyed camping, whether as a boy scout or scoutmaster or with his family in his Palace trailer.
Chuck was known for his sense of humor, his gentle and loving nature, his sense of style (in truth, a sense that came from Nina), his optimism, his loyalty to people and institutions and a genuine love of people. Everyone he met was a potential friend.
Chuck and Nina had four children; Ted (Betty), Gary (Deborah), Christine (Keith) Pople, and Charna (Bob) Welch, all who knew that each was number one in their dad’s eyes. Every grandchild and great grandchild also knew they were number one as well. His grandchildren are; Katie, Laura (Devin), John, Kimberley (Chad), Keith (Blerina), Alexis, Jessica, Zach (Kim), and Nick (Janna). His great grandchildren are; Lydia, Landon, Kaylond, Eden, and Mackenzie.  He is also survived by his brother Dick (Marjie). Chuck was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Christena; sister, Maxine; brother, Bob; granddaughter, Anne Marie and great-grandson, Charlie.

Marville Anna Frith, age 101 — a devoted wife, mother and grandmother — died peacefully on Saturday, November 16, 2019, at Flower House of Nashville. Marville, formerly of Vermontville, was born July 16, 1918, in Morris, IL, the daughter of Andrew Elmer and Anna Marie (Olsen) Lindberg. She graduated high school in Vermontville before earning a bachelor’s degree from Western State Teachers College. She taught at Eaton County Country Schools, including the Brown School, Nickle School, and Thornton School, then in Grand Ledge Public Schools.

Marville married Lawrence A. Frith on July 23, 1944, at Jefferson Parish in New Orleans, LA.  Following marriage, Marville settled in to raise their four children. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, 4H throughout her lifetime and Farm Bureau. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, genealogy and reading. Marville also loved nature and was always seeking to name the many birds and their songs she encountered. Marville’s family will always carry her in their hearts.

Marville is survived by her daughters, Patricia (Gordon) Swan and Barbara Pixley; sons, Russell Frith and Bart (Frances) Frith; grandchildren, Christine (Michael) Bonk, Jillaine (Chad) LeCompte, Kathryn (Ben) Vanderveen, Richard Pixley, Deborah (Jeff) Hayes; step-grandchildren, Shelly, Melissa, Michael, Lynette, William, Russell; great-grandchildren, Tim, Angie, Joe, Lucy and Peter Bonk; Michael and Elena LeCompte; Charlie and Ali Vanderveen; Kendal and Morgen Pixley; Trey Harvath; Chad Hayes; and many more step-great-grandchildren.  She is predeceased by her husband, Lawrence Frith; brothers, Ernest “Bud” Lindberg and William Lindberg; grandson, Tommy Pixley; step-great-grandson, Michael Gabriel; son-in-law, Jerry Pixley; and daughter-in-law, Sharen Frith.

Beverly J. Martens, age 92, of Bellevue, died on November 24, 2019, at Calhoun County Medical Care Facility after a long illness.

Beverly was born on November 16, 1927, in Battle Creek to Harold R. and Gertrude (Watts) Burt. The family moved around while she was growing up, and she attended schools in the Battle Creek area. They settled in Bellevue, where she enrolled in school. She graduated from Bellevue High School in 1945.

Her father worked at the Ford Garage in Bellevue with a young man named Clarence Martens. On a visit to her father at the Ford garage she met him. She noted that Clarence was quite the jokester, and Beverly was taken with him. Clarence taught her to drive. They fell in love and were married on August 26, 1947, in a small church ceremony in Bellevue. The couple took a honeymoon trip to Tahquamenon Falls. They returned to make their home in Bellevue, where they first lived with her parents until they could afford their own home several years after marriage. Beverly and Clarence sold their first home and bought a farm on Ionia Road, where they raised their family. Beverly was a homemaker and worked at the Bellevue school library when her children were in school.

Beverly was a devoted member of the Bellevue United Methodist Church, where she had taught Sunday school. She belonged to the United Methodist Church Women’s Society.  She volunteered with the Eaton County 4-H, including teaching seamstress skills. She loved to square dance and ballroom dance. Bingo, board and card games were always an enjoyable way for her to pass the time and have fun. She was a talented seamstress who made most of her children’s clothing. Her family remembers her as a great baker who created many wonderful treats for her family. Attending the mother-daughter banquet at the Bellevue United Methodist Church was always a special yearly event for her and her daughters. Towards the end of her life, she felt she had fulfilled her life’s goal of being a good mother and wife, which her family heartily agreed with.

Beverly and Clarence enjoyed wintering in Englewood, FL, for 20 years. They were always very active, enjoying socializing. They would organize cruises for groups of people and got to enjoy a lot of travel. Beverly always said that her husband taught her to enjoy life to its fullest, and they did that always.

Clarence preceded her in death on May 31, 2007.

Surviving are her children Jim (Eva) Martens of Bowling Green, Kentucky, Susie Butler of Nashville, and Cindy (Mike) Parkinson of Bellevue; 10 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her brother Richard Burt and son-in-law Alvin Butler.  

Beverly’s family wants to express their thanks and gratitude to Dr. Chung and the entire staff at the Calhoun County Medical Care Facility for their kindness, dedication and care of their beloved mother and grandmother.
