For a friendly, small-town, down-to-earth place to get your hair done, try Mary’s Hair Care in Olivet. Mary’s Hair Care is a full-service salon and does haircuts for men, women, and children, including clipper cuts. The salon has been open for 28 years and Mary Boehmer is the owner and stylist, along with Nicole Hayes-Redfield.
Hayes-Redfield focuses on hair, manicures, and pedicures, while Boehmer focuses on hair; cuts, color, and styling. Some of the services that they offered previously, such as eyebrow waxing, are currently not allowed due to pandemic restrictions. Anything that involves the face and mask removal is not currently advised.
The salon closed temporarily in 2020, as did all the others, for about three months due to COVID-19 restrictions. When they were able to re-open in June, they were kept busy for several months, catching up with everyone.
“We appreciate all the loyal people that waited for us to come back,” Boehmer said.
Their services are still limited, but at least their doors are open. Salons and barbershops may remain open with appointments only, no walk-ins, due to the State of Michigan COVID-19 mandates.
“It’s been a struggle accommodating all the rules and regulations issued by the state,” said Boehmer. “But we’re trying to distance ourselves and to be as safe as possible for our clients.”
“As licensed professionals, we are trained in sanitation, especially in preventing the spread of infection and disease,” Boehmer said. Michigan already has some of the most stringent protocols in the country that are required for salons and barbershops, even without COVID-19.
Appointments are staggered so that only one client is in the shop at a time, or if more than one, social distancing measures are employed for everyone’s safety. Masks are always required.
“It’s not easy giving a haircut to a client wearing a mask,” said Boehmer. “But with a little finagling, holding the straps up and out of the way, it can be done,” she added,
“We really try to be family-oriented. We love the small-town loyalty that we see, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic,” Boehmer said. “We want to be as compliant as possible.”
Mary’s Hair Care sells BioSilk Silk Therapy products. This product line is infused with natural pure silk to repair, smooth, and protect all hair types, Boehmer explained.
“Mary’s Hair Care has been a pillar in the Olivet community for many years,” the Olivet Community Chamber of Commerce commented. “Mary and Nicole do a great job helping people to look and feel beautiful.”
