They’ve visited 23 schools in less than two years, spreading their love and enthusiasm for reading with hundreds of students. Their message has reached employees at the State of Michigan, residents at the VFW National Home for Children and youth battling cancer at the MSU Pediatric Oncology Clinic.
Members of Bikers 4 Books non-profit never envisioned this kind of impact, at least not in just two short years. When Badge Velasquez and his wife, Kendra founded the non-profit, their goal was to raise enough money to help Olivet Middle School’s library. That mission was accomplished in just 90 days. So, the organization set out to help another school.
“We’ve given at least $15,000 back to schools through a combination of funds and books,” Kendra said.
Bikers 4 Books, which is made up of motorcycle enthusiasts and representation from at least 20 different motorcycle clubs from the Mid-Michigan area, has supported schools as far west as Wayland; as far east as Fowlerville; as far north as Mt. Pleasant and as far south as Colon.
“You get all of these guys from different walks of life that come together for a day,” Badge said. “It’s something that wasn’t intended, but has been great.”
They all come together for the purpose of helping youth. And, they’re just getting started.
“The response has been overwhelming,” Badge said. “It’s a great feeling when you have the confidence to know the community supports what you are doing because they believe in you.”
The community has another chance to support the non-profit. Bikers 4 Books will hold its second “birthday” party and benefit on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. at Eaton Pub and Grille in Charlotte. The evening will feature dinner, dancing, an auction and raffles. Badge said he expects a large turnout, if last year’s inaugural event is any indication.
He said it’s important the organization’s fundraisers (the group holds a motorcycle ride in September) do well each year in order for the group to continue to help as many schools and as many youth as possible.
“There’s no overhead, we’re all volunteers,” Badge said. “We get to hang out with a lot of great kids and raise money doing something we love and would be doing anyway. It’s allowed us to keep our presentations free.”
Badge said the group is available to schools that have a need.
“We always ask, if you had a blank check, what would it take to change your program?” Velasquez said. “A lot of times it’s eye-opening how little it would take. Schools should know, if they need help that’s what we’re here for.”
