William Thomas Chaney

William Thomas Chaney, age 75, of Lansing, MI passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, December 8, 2022. Bill was born on May 25, 1947, in Eaton Rapids, MI the son of Duncan and Louise (Ferrel) Chaney. He was raised in Eaton Rapids where he graduated class of 1965. Bill went on to proudly serve in the US Marine Corps during the Vietnam War and served from 1966 to 1968. He worked for the US Postal Service in Eaton Rapids as a mail carrier for 35 years. Bill was a car enthusiast and loved working on his 1965 Chevy Impala SS. He enjoyed taking it to car shows and often had it parked on Main Street in Eaton Rapids throughout the summer. After retirement, Bill worked for Shaheen Chevrolet as a car porter which gave him the opportunity to drive all kinds of unique cars. He was also a sports fanatic and enjoyed Michigan State Basketball and the Detroit Lions. Above all, Bill loved his family and especially cherished the time he spent with his two granddaughters.
He is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Bruce Chaney.
Surviving is his son, Donavon (Sarah) Chaney; granddaughters, Makenzie and Emily Chaney; companion of 20 years, Carolyn Davis; brother, Art (Cindy) Chaney; sister, Nellie (Jose) Marez and numerous extended family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, December 19, 2022, at Skinner Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids with visitation starting at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Roscommon County Veterans Office C/O County Treasurer in memory of Bill. Jack “Lon” Overmyer II of Eaton Rapids, passed away Wednesday, December 7, 2022, at the age of 55. He was born in Flint, MI, on September 19, 1967, the son of Leonard II and Betty (Colosi) Overmyer. Jack was a graduate of Eaton Rapids High School, class of 1985. He was passionate about refurbishing antiques, playing the guitar, and fostering cats. Jack was the favorite brother/uncle/friend who was generous, quirky, and passionate. He was a really cool guy who always went out of his way to help friends and family.
Jack is survived by his siblings, Ginger (Dave) Boerkircher of NE, Sherri (TJ) Caster of OK, Leann Owen of Charlotte, Leonard Overmyer III of Traverse City, Bear (Cheri) Overmyer of OH; brother-in-law, Richard Owen of Eaton Rapids; many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; and sister Shannon Overmyer.

Coy Kirk Morton, Jr., 92, of Charlotte, a hardworking man of integrity and love for his family, died peacefully on Sunday, December 4, 2022, in Lansing. Coy was born December 1, 1930, in Lansing, the son of Coy Kirk and Nettie Pearl (Mick) Morton. He graduated from Everett H.S. in 1950, where he loved playing football, before enlisting in the National Guard during the , Korean Conflict. Coy married his lifelong love, Norma Jean Young on November 5, 1955, and the two settled into family life. He worked over 30 years as an Operating Engineer, setting steel with a crane for various companies throughout the years. He was a proud member of Operating Engineers Union Local 324 in Lansing. Coy and Jean moved to their farm in Eaton Township in 1965, where they raised cattle, most recently Longhorns. Coy loved life on the farm. He was also a founding member of the Eaton County Sherriff’s mounted posse and enjoyed parades throughout the county and the relationships he developed along the way. Throughout his life, Coy was a deeply devoted Republican. He served on the executive committee of the Eaton County Republicans and was Volunteer of the Year as well as a recipient of the Frank M. Fitzgerald Lifetime Achievement Award. He was a proud Spartan Fan, attending MSU football games for years. Above all, Coy lived a life devoted to his family.
Coy is survived by his wife of 67 years, Jean Morton; three sons, Brian (Tracy) Morton, Bradley (Teresa) Morton and Brent (Kelly) Morton; 11 grandchildren, Christopher (Carissa) Morton, Rachelle Miller, Douglas (Sarah) Flanagan, William (Crystal) Ashley, Adam (Ciara) Ashley, Renae Morton, Shawna Morton, Kay Morton, Kaeden Maynard, Carly Morton, and Audrey Morton; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his infant granddaughter, Cara Ann Morton; and sister, Linda Garrett.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 10, 2022, at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte with Pastor Garry Fisher officiating. Beverly Jean Kesson passed away November 30, 2022. Born March 14, 1938, she was a long-time resident of Windsor Township, Dimondale, Michigan.
Beverly graduated in the top ten in her class of 1956 in Dimondale. She married and had four children. After the divorce, she went to work at The Ledges Shopping Guide. In 1980 she went to work for the US Post Office, where she made some valuable and life-long friends. She retired in 1999 and began traveling across the United States, Alaska, and Hawaii. With Aunt Wilda and a small group of travel companions, they traveled for over ten years. She loved to travel. Over the last 15 years she also met up with high school friends once a month for a luncheon at different establishments. She always looked forward to that.
Beverly was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and a true friend to those who knew her. Caring and giving; if in need, she would give indeed. She always stated she had a wonderful life! She will be missed by us who love her.
She is preceded in death by her son, Craig A. Kesson; parents, Russ and Mary Decess; and brothers, Junior (Russ) and Richard Decess.
Surviving are her children, Kerry Kesson, Laurie (Gary) Spiekhout, and Tommy (Dana) Kesson; siblings Peggy Henderson, Monte (Mona) Decess and Scott Decess; nine grandchildren: Aaron, Amy, April, Erica, Karisa, Katrina, and Jared, and Jolene and Amanda of Texas; thirteen great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Diane Elaine Sedlar, age 58, of Olivet, Michigan, passed away at home surrounded by her family on Sunday, December 4, 2022. Diane was born on July 11, 1964, to Nelson and Janice (Houseman) Gates in Fort Benning, Georgia. She graduated from Owosso High School with the class of ’82. On April 8, 1989, Diane married David Sedlar in Owosso.
Diane was an outdoors gal! She loved the summertime when as a family they would enjoy camping and boating together. When winter rolled around and the snow began to fall, Diane had a blast snowmobiling. She was always ready for a game of cards in the evening. Diane adored her family and lived for them. She will be deeply missed by all.
Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, David; sons, Brandon Sedlar of Battle Creek, MI, Jamie (Marsha) Sedlar of Taylor, MI, Jason (Steven) Sedlar, Charlotte, North Carolina; grandchildren, T.J. Cousino, Jaylin Sedlar, Maddix Sedlar; great grandchild, Marissa Cousino; brother, Tom Gates of Owosso, MI; sister, Nicole (Casey) Clifford; nieces, Kimberly Gates, Kya Clifford; and many cousins in Sabina, Ohio.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Mark Gates; and parents-in-law, Martin and Irene Sedlar.
Funeral services were held on Friday, December 9, 2022, at 11 a.m. at the Burkhead-Green-Kilgo Funeral Home with Brian Roberts officiating. Burial will take place at Bosworth Cemetery.

Norman Joseph Simpson of Eaton Rapids, passed away Tuesday, December 6, 2022, at the age of 88. He was born in Bath, MI on September 14, 1934, the son of Raymond and Josephine (Trayer) Simpson. Norm worked for the State of Michigan as a groundsman for several years before retiring. He was a member of the Capital City Old Car Club. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, and the car club.
Norm is survived by his daughter, Cherly (Jeff) Donley of Potterville, Ronnie (Debra) Simpson of Ovid, Connie Rohrer of Lansing and Randy Rohrer of WA; grandchildren, Kristina, Stasi, Matthew, Jeremy, Jennifer, and Rebecca; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Sheila May Gilpin passed away Monday, November 28, 2022, at the age of 84. She was born in Hastings, Michigan on December 22, 1937, the youngest of five children to Max and Leila (Wolfe) Gooch. She was a spunky child growing up, never afraid to catch wild animals, run barefoot through the neighborhood or jump off chicken coops. She, along with her sisters and brother, grew up in a loving and caring home. During her childhood, she and her family moved from Charlotte to Eaton Rapids, graduating from Eaton Rapids High School in 1956. After graduating, she met James (Jim) Gilpin and fell in love. She and Jim were married on February 15, 1958. They welcomed two children; a daughter, Toni and a son, Troy. In 1980, they completed the build on their very own home and moved in. Throughout the last 42 years, Sheila and Jim landscaped, tended, and cared for their seven-acre paradise. She loved her gardens, saving every sapling she ever came across. She was an avid rock hunter, adventurous traveler, and antique queen. She enjoyed painting and teaching others how. She was a rebel of sorts, even becoming one of the first women in the area to ride her very own motorcycle. Her nickname was “Yama-hama-mama.” She retired from the Eaton Rapids bus garage after 22 years. After her retirement, she devoted her time to her passions: gardening, decorating, and most importantly, her family. She spent as much time as she could with her four grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and one great great-grandson. Their “GG” held a special connection to each and every one of them. She was always there teaching them and encouraging them to blaze their own path through life. Her motto was, “Keep it simple- just like me.”
Sheila is survived by her husband of 64 years, James Gilpin; children, Toni Matthews of Eaton Rapids, Troy Gilpin of Eaton Rapids; grandchildren: Jessica Seguin of Eaton Rapids, Meagan (Randy) McLouth of Eaton Rapids, Nikolas Matthews of Eaton Rapids, Kelsey (Brandon) Matthews-Trosper of Eaton Rapids; ten great-grandchildren; one great great-grandson; sisters, Mickey Schnepp of Lansing, Kay Love of Eaton Rapids; several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents; sister, Joyce Elston; brother, Larry Gooch.
A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, December 22, 2022, at the Mills Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids. Visitation will take place one hour prior. Richard “Rick” Allen Dunning of Eaton Rapids, passed away on Sunday, December 4, 2022, at the age of 77. He was born in Charlotte, MI, on June 29, 1945, the son of Fred and Maxine (Rogers) Steward. Rick graduated from Leslie High School. He worked for General Motors until he retired at the age of 48. Rick was a member of the Onondaga Sportsman Club.
While known as a quiet and humble man, Rick had a surprisingly mischievous side. His hobbies included playing practical jokes, losing his drone in the woods, making friends with Phil the pheasant, disagreeing with his friends at the sportsman club, scaring kids at Halloween, and starting but never finishing projects.
Rick is survived by the mother of his children, Gerri Brooks; daughters, Lee (Gregory) Prost of Troy, MI and Nikki (Ronald) Miller of Fort Wayne, IN; grandchildren, Mason (Claire) Miller, Allison Prost, Cassidy Miller, Robert Prost, and Julia Miller; great grandchildren, Zion Miller and Holland Miller; sisters, Sue Foster, Lori (Marty) Seling, Lynn Kita, and Marcy (Richard) Mentink. He is preceded in death by his parents.

Gary Lee Clarke of Springport, MI passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, November 27, 2022, at the age of 80. Gary was born on March 12, 1942, in Brookfield Township the fourth of seven children born to Laurence and Velma (Harshey) Clarke. He was raised in Eaton Rapids where he attended school. Gary went to work for Cords Well Drilling right out of school and then to Williams Farm Machinery, Eaton Stamping, he worked for General Motors for 16 years, started Gary’s Small Engine Service in 1981 and currently owned and operated the Bargain Shack in Springport. Gary had a great love for his Lord Jesus Christ and faithfully attended the First Baptist Church in Eaton Rapids for the past 21 years. He enjoyed hunting and was an avid fisherman. Gary loved riding his gator on his property and made numerous trails where he could watch the wildlife around him.
He is preceded in death by his parents, siblings, Allan (Marsha) Clarke, Dean (Linda) Clarke, Don (Joyce) Clarke, Marie (Carl) Florian and son-in-law, Jose Cantu III.
Surviving is his wife, Ruth (Wheeler) Clarke; daughters, Cheri Cantu, Suzi Clarke; grandchildren, Jose “Joey” Cantu, Jesus “Jesse” Cantu; brothers, Maynard (Kathy) Clarke, Maurice (Gloria Fleming) Clarke and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 1, 2022, at the First Baptist Church in Eaton Rapids. The family will received friends at Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids on Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and one hour prior to the service on Thursday.
