Edmund R. Cupp

Edmund Ronald Cupp, of Eaton Rapids, Mich. passed away on Monday, January 18, 2021 at the age of 82. Ed was born on May 22, 1938 in Lansing, Mich., the son of Don and Myrtie (Freer) Cupp. He graduated from Eaton Rapids High School class of 1956 and went on to serve four years in the Army National Guard. Ed married Dora Jean Meyer in 1958 and together they had three sons. He was a hard-working man who farmed dairy from the age of 13. Ed was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Charlotte where he ran the soundboard for many years. He enjoyed camping, fishing, snowmobiling and loved to cook, especially for his family and friends.
Ed is preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Donald Cupp, Helen Whitmore, Doris Long and Roy Cupp.
Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Dora Jean; sons, Kevin Cupp, Keith (Paula) Cupp, Don (LeAnn) Cupp; grandchildren, Justin (Jessica Pizion) Cupp, Carissa (Kyle) Reece, Ross Cupp, Kevin (Cassie) Cupp II, Caitlin (Christopher) Lea, Theodore (Sarah) Doukakos, Anthony (Jody) Doukakos, Amber (Andy) Jones, Alex Martin; great-grandchildren, Halle Mitchell, Quinn Reece, Haelyn and Tucker Cupp, Ariya Taylor, Logan Lea; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Eunice E. Bateman

Eunice Eloise Bateman passed away peacefully on January 13, 2021 due to non-COVID illness. She was the youngest of three children born to Edna and Elijah Evans on November 1, 1933 at the home of her uncle Roy Parker in Battle Creek, Mich. She spent her early years in Fruitport, Mich. until going to live at the VFW National Home in Eaton Rapids. She graduated ERHS class of 1952. In high school she met, dated and married K Strong Bateman.
Eunice was preceded in death by her husband, K Strong Bateman in 2005; her daughter, Kimberly Sue in 2019 and special friend and companion, Doyle Woodward in 2016.
She is survived by two sons, David (Diane) Bateman, Mark (Laurie) Bateman; grandchildren, Ryan Perritt, Jennifer Schneider, Melissa (Casey) Wallick, Andrew Bateman, Evan (Lauren) Bateman, Christopher Bateman; great-grandchildren, Braedon Schneider, Izzy Perritt, Jasper Wallick, Finn Bateman and another expected July 2021.

Shannon Linette Sharp, of Eaton Rapids, Mich. slipped into the arms of Jesus on Sunday, January 10, 2021 at the age of 51. Shannon was born on February 13, 1969 in Eaton Rapids the daughter of Dennis McManus and Sonja Higbie. She graduated from Eaton Rapids High School class of 1987 and went on to receive her bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University. Shannon worked as a lab technician at Sparrow Hospital for 18 years. She also worked for the Red Cross and most recently was the Bioterrorism Training Coordinator for the State of Michigan. She loved her job and the opportunity it provided her to travel. She loved music and was a talented musician playing the piano and the French horn in high school. Shannon enjoyed baking holiday pies and her special sugar cookies. She was a lifelong student absorbing all she could learn about science and health topics. Shannon was involved in the children’s and women’s ministry at Robbins United Methodist Church and served as president for the Eaton Rapids Band Boosters when her children were in school. Shannon was a cat lover and a true MSU fan but nothing brought her greater pride than her children. Faith and Brendan’s wellbeing was always central as they were the world to her. Shannon had been attending the First Baptist Church and professed her strong faith in her Lord when she was recently baptized. Shannon is preceded in death by her husband, Daniel Sharp in 2015.
Surviving are her children, Faith Sharp, Brendan Sharp; boyfriend, Josh Hill; parents, Dennis McManus, Sonja and John Oatley; sister, Melissa (Jimmy) Scott and numerous nieces and nephews, including Jessie (Steve) Foley, Travis (Melissa) Burgess.

Amanda J. Gatica

Amanda Jean (Hill) Gatica, born August 27, 1983 to Kevin and Belinda Hill, passed away January 15, 2021 after a long and hard-fought battle with cancer.  Amanda was born in Eaton Rapids where she was raised, attended school and graduated in 2002.  She went on to work for Walmart in Charlotte for the next 17 years and spent the last 12 of those years in the pharmacy, working as their best pharmacy technician.  Her greatest joy in life was being Carlijean’s mom. At family gatherings, Amanda was always the one who wanted to play some sort of game, usually winning because of her competitive nature. The family joked that she was the biggest kid.  Amanda was always late to everything! She was the cool aunt/mom, always wanting to go out and do fun things with the kids, such as visit the zoo, paint pottery, have sleepovers, go to water parks, or the movie theater.  You could say Amanda was a hoarder of yarn!  She loved to crochet.   Amanda was always finding new patterns to try and new colors of yarn to buy. She married the love of her life, Juan, on May 7, 2016. Her loss will be felt deeply, and she will be missed dearly. 
She is preceded in death by her grandmother Carol Jean Wright and grandfather Paul Anderson.  She is survived by her parents; daughter, Carlijean Benson; husband, Juan Gatica; sisters Ashley (Evan) Gruesbeck and Brittney Hill; nieces and nephew, Evelyn and Liam Gruesbeck, and Olivia Adkins;  In-laws, Juan Gatica Sr., Ofelia and Randy Glasgow; sisters-in-law, Jessica (Loren) Seaton, Jolene Glasgow; brother-in-law Ricky Glasgow; and nieces Kelsey, Alysia and Maya; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and dear friends.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, January 23, 2021 at Skinner Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids chapel. Joyce Irene Adleman, of Eaton Rapids, Mich. passed away January 14, 2021 at the age of 82. Born January 24, 1938 in Evart, Michigan, one of six children, to Arnold and Irene (Bruff) Knoop. Joyce graduated from Evart High School class of 1956 and married her husband Paul in 1957. She later worked for Farm Bureau in Lansing as an internal auditor and retired after 26 years of service. She was a devoted mother and grandmother who loved to “mother her girls.” Joyce also enjoyed gardening, canning, baking cakes and feeding the birds and wildlife in her yard.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Virgil and Franklin. She is survived by her husband, Paul Duane; sons Tim (Sue) and Ron (Barb) Adleman; daughter, Kathy (Dennis) Desgrange; sisters, Betty (Ray) Pier, Sandy Shraft and Dorlis Gibson; and several nieces, nephews and friends.
Graveside services were held Tuesday, January 19, 2021, at Munger Cemetery with a visitation at Skinner Funeral Home prior to services. Pamela Scofic of Onondaga, formerly of Mason and Eaton Rapids, passed away on January 14, 2021 after a hard-fought battle with COVID. 
Pam has been reunited with her son, Michael Scofic, who passed away in 2014. She is survived by her daughters Heidi Brininstool (Jesse) and Diane Nelson (Phillip) and her honorary daughter Deena Bunce. Pam was the loving grandmother (G-Ma) of Beth (Kevin), Steven, Justin, Emily (Dustin), Kaylee, Kyle and Jonah, and was the great-grandmother to Preston, Dustin, Lakyn and Bentley. She was the sister of Gay (Jack) and Dave (Cathy), and was the dear friend of Dorene, Pat and many, many, many others. 
Pam was a gift to the world and spent her life doing good works. She cared for and treated thousands of children as a pediatric nurse in the Lansing area for nearly 50 years, and eventually retired as an immunizations nurse with the Ingham County Health Department. After retiring, Pam became an active and lively volunteer at City Rescue Mission in Lansing, where she cared for homeless guests by serving meals, cleaning, distributing supplies, and performing any other tasks that were asked of her. 
She was an ardent MSU football and basketball fan, and lost her voice more than once yelling at or cheering for her teams. She was also an avid gardener and dedicated untold hours to her flower beds and garden. She loved knitting, playing cards, reading smutty books, eating at Cracker Barrel, socializing with friends and family, and making new friends. 
Pam loved her family and friends fiercely and unconditionally. She was kind, generous, funny and thoughtful. Pam loved talking with everyone, even complete strangers! She had a great sense of humor and could take a joke just as good as she gave them. She loved being more-than-a-little naughty, had a mile-wide stubborn streak, and was beyond feisty. Pam was strong beyond measure, raising three kids completely on her own, and throughout her life, overcame obstacles that would have destroyed most others. She was also a safe space for anyone to turn to, and was always willing to provide support, guidance and a shoulder to lean on for anyone going through tough times. Her heart had no limits. Her love had no boundaries. Her loyalty was unbreakable. And her sass was untamable. 
Pam’s passing has left a hole in the hearts of all who knew her. Her light and her love will be forever missed. 
Visitation was held on Monday, January 18, 2021 at Mills Funeral Home, 518 Main Street, Eaton Rapids, MI 48827.  In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the City Rescue Mission, 2216 S. Mr. Thomas  “Tom” Williams, 71, of  Vermontville, passed away on Monday, January 4, 2021 at his home.
Tom was born in Cadillac, Mich. on October 15, 1949, the son of the late Stanley and Francis Williams.
He was raised in the Haslett area and attended local schools, graduating from Haslett High School in 1967. Upon completing high school Tom joined the United State Marine Corps. Tom bravely served three consecutive tours in the Vietnam War, participating in over 20 forward operations and campaigns.  While serving his country, Tom achieved the rank of Sergeant, and was decorated with the Combat Action Ribbon, two Presidential Unit Citations, four Naval Unit Citations, Meritorious Unit Citation, the Good Conduct Medal, National Service Medal, seven Vietnam Service Medals, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry. Tom was honorably discharged on December 11, 1970, but remained as an active reserve from 1980-1984.
The relationships that Tom and his unit developed while serving together enriched all their lives and forged life-long friendships that they all continue to this very day.  Tom looked forward each year to traveling the United States to visit his dear friends and participate in their Marine Corp reunions.  Tom was honored to be inducted into the very elite and limited membership as a Knight of the Military Or of the Spirit Warrior, was a Life Member of the 2/4 Association, 1st Marine Division Association, and the 3rd Marine Division Association, Commander of the Vietnam Veterans of America Ellis E. Austin Chapter in Vermontville, served as the Vermontville American Legion Commander for over ten years and in 1994 was appointed as the Vietnam Veterans of America representative for the Eaton County MVTF Committee. 
On December 23, 1970 Tom married Debra (Austin) Williams.  They began their lives together in Eaton Rapids and St. Johns areas until divorcing in 1976.  Although divorced, they were able to develop a friendship in the past ten years and remained close.  He was married to Connie Rickey from 1978-1989.  In 1994 Tom married Kelly (Dickey) Williams and the couple made their home together in Vermontville. They remained married until Kelly’s passing.  
Tom had a strong passion for auto racing.  This began when he returned from Vietnam and started racing with his brother at local Michigan short tracks.  Throughout the years he has raced many different styles of cars, most recently racing the Super Late Model division.  If you stopped by Tom’s on any given afternoon, he was most likely in the barn working on one of his race cars or talking about one of his other vehicles that he took great pride in. He was also an avid Michigan State football fan and began taking his children to games over 30 years ago.  He and his daughter have been season ticket holders for over 20 years and when she couldn’t attend, Tom enjoyed taking his friends to the games.  He loved that his granddaughters Ahvia and Ella were getting into the football spirit too and the family tradition could continue.  The grandchildren were the “apple of his eye.”  He would drop everything when he had the opportunity to hang out with them, whether it was fishing, watching them play sports or activities, or just having sleepovers at grandpa’s house.  For the first years of his grandsons’ lives, Tuesdays were known as “grandpa day” as he began his babysitting career watching Jacob when he was three months and then when Holden was born, Tuesdays were still “grandpa day” as he cared for a newborn and one year old as if it was no big deal to him.  He made being a grandpa look easy and his grandchildren always felt loved by him.  During the summer he would vacation in Gatlinburg with his daughter’s family and granddaughter Ahvia. There wasn’t anything grandpa wouldn’t do for his grandchildren. 
Tom is survived by his two daughters, Vicki (Michael) Roush of Potterville, Mich. and their children Jacob, Holden and Ella, and  Gina Sherman of Boulder, Col. and her children Wyatt and Danika; two sons, Mike (Lindsay) Williams of Easton, Pa., Erwin Sherman of Boulder, Col.; a step son, Anthony Avitable of Charlotte, Mich.; sister, Francis Talton; brother, Allan Williams; and granddaughter, Ahvia Avitable.  
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Stanley and Frances Williams; wife, Kelly Williams; brother, Erwin Williams;  son, Stephen Williams; and step daughter, SaraJayne Smith.
Tom will be laid to rest with full military honors provided by the United States Marine Corp, The American Legion Post 45 – Hastings, Mich., with reprenstatives from The Vermontville American Legion, and a tribute from the Patriot Riders at  Woodlawn Cemetery in Vermontville, Mich.  with Pastor Robert Batterham officiating.
The family received visitors on  Sunday, January 10, 2021 at The Daniels Funeral Home in Nashville, Mich.
