Downtown Charlotte is in the midst of a renaissance of sorts as new shops open and facades undergo needed improvements. There are, however, a few staple retail businesses that have served as downtown’s anchor, providing stability during the uncertain economic times of the recent past. One retail business, Carl Reck Jewelers, has managed to not only weather the storm, but come out of it stronger than ever.

In fact, this month, Carl Reck is celebrating 45 years as the area’s premier jeweler.

The business has adapted over the years from its beginnings selling fine silverware to its current offerings of trendy fashion watches. The family owned business has kept its finger on the pulse of the jewelry industry and more importantly, on the pulse of what its customers want.

Matt DeLeeuw, who purchased the business from his father, Dan in 2011 said the family business has always focused on bringing the best value and newest styles to the community, at a competitive price. The consistency in quality products and service, Matt said, is a reason customers keep coming back.

“It’s always been about the customer first,” added longtime employee Carrie Burch.

The customer experience at Carl Reck extends from complimentary jewelry cleaning to custom jewelry design consultations. Offering a large number of rings, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, charms, and watches on display, meeting customer’s needs also includes an extensive catalog of items that can be ordered, and/or customized.

To celebrate 45 years in business, Carl Reck is offering several specials and giveaways in the coming weeks. Stop into Carl Reck in September to sign up for one of its weekly giveaways. Spend $100 and customers qualify for a drawing to win a ¼-carat diamond.

“We want to thank the community for their loyal patronage and support over the last 45 years,” said owner, Matt DeLeeuw.

Customers can stop in to the store, located at 106 S. Cochran Avenue in downtown Charlotte, or follow Carl Reck Jewelers on Facebook. Carl V. Reck Jewelers is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, visit or call (517) 543-6531.
