While honoring our nation’s fallen heroes this Memorial Day weekend, take a moment to notice the flags proudly displayed throughout downtown Charlotte. United States flags will surround the perimeter of Courthouse Square and line Cochran and Lawrence avenues in an impressive display of patriotism.
These flags stand for liberty, loyalty, courage and integrity. It is these ideals that local individuals, organizations and businesses wish to celebrate throughout the year through their support of the Charlotte Kiwanis Club Flag Project. Each flag displayed in the community is sponsored by an individual, organization or business to be flown several times throughout the year. In the first year of the project, the Kiwanis Club secured close to 100 sponsors. There is a need for more in year two.
Flags can be sponsored for $65 for the first year and $50 a year thereafter. The flags will be placed on light poles along the downtown corridor of Cochran and Lawrence avenues and will surround Courthouse Square six to seven times a year if not more.
Plans are set to have the flags displayed on Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Patriots Day, Labor Day, Veteran’s Day and potentially on election days. The Kiwanis Club will have applications available at Courthouse Square during the Memorial Day festivities on Monday, May 25.
The project will also serve as a small fundraiser with the Kiwanis Club and Courthouse Square splitting the proceeds.
