It is with great sadness that we must let everyone know about the difficult decision we faced. We had to humanely euthanize Winter, the great horned owl found in southwest Michigan back in December. (See the story in the January 3 Flashes Advertising & News.)

Despite our best efforts, including the strongest medicine and twice-daily foot treatments, Winter’s condition did not improve. Unfortunately, the zip tie that was tightly wound around her ankle had already cut off the blood supply to her foot for too long. As a result, the foot became necrotic and died. Without her foot, Winter would not have been able to perform essential movements such as perching and tearing her food. Therefore, the heartbreaking decision was made.

We deeply appreciate all the donations made for Winter. Your efforts helped provide the medicine that kept her comfortable during the weeks we fought so hard to save her. Please know that each day, she was fed all the treats she could have wanted and was kept safe, warm, and pain-free. She was loved not only by all our volunteers but also by all of you.

Wildlife rehabilitation is truly a team effort, and we could not have fought as hard as we did without your support. Your kindness and generosity have made a world of difference.

As we say goodbye, let us take comfort in knowing that Winter now flies free.
