Timothy Summer

Timothy “Tim” Leon Summer, a Charlotte resident with a generous heart who was always willing to help, died Friday, November 4, 2022, in Marshall following a lengthy illness.  Tim was born October 5, 1948, in Ionia, Michigan to Arthur and Julia (Rock) Summer. Starting in the fifth grade, Tim developed a love for music and learned to play the cornet and trumpet. He was inspired by his favorite trumpet artist, Herb Alpert.   This was a talent he carried into his adult life.  Tim was a 1966 graduate of Olivet High School.
On April 5, 1968, he married the love of his life, Joyce King.  A great curiosity of mechanical things led him to a career in Heating Ventilating and Cooling (HVAC) that continued until his retirement in 2007 from T.H. Eifert Mechanical Contractors in Lansing.  Over the years Tim earned a reputation of being able to fix anything.  His abilities also came in handy serving his church, Calvary Baptist Church of Charlotte. Not only did he use his ability to fix, repair, and build at the church, but he also used his talent as a musician playing his cornet and trumpet in the church orchestra.  Tim and his wife Joyce helped with the youth of the church becoming Awana youth group leaders.  Tim loved leading his third and fourth grade boys’ group and working side by side with his wife to oversee the Awana Quizzing team, helping the team to learn the Bible and about their own faith. Tim especially loved helping the Awana youth build race cars for their annual competition.  He even built his own versions of the little wooden cars to race alongside the youth members.
His family recalls many wonderful times spent with Tim.  Among those times were fishing trips to local lakes, and family bowling at the local bowling alley.  Above all else he was proud of his family and the ability to help others.
Tim is survived by his wife of 54 years, Joyce; their two daughters Kellie (Carl) Boykin, and Melissa (Justin Southern) Summer; their two sons Arthur (Jenn) Summer and Jeff (Jodette) Summer; four granddaughters; three grandsons; one great-granddaughter; two great-grandsons; his sister, Carol Dane; and brother, Jim (Cindy) Summer.
The family received guests during visitation at the Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte on Tuesday, November 8th from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.  The funeral service was conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 9th at The Calvary Baptist Church in Charlotte with Pastor Tim Potter officiating. Interment will follow in Perry Cemetery.  If desired memorial contributions may be made in Tim’s memory to Dementia Society of America or Calvary Baptist Church Charlotte.
