With the plaques representing the inaugural class of the Charlotte Athletic Hall of Fame hanging safely on the wall of the Charlotte High School, the selection committee has turned its focus to the Class of 2019.
Nominations are accepted throughout the year, though the deadline to be considered for this year’s class of inductees is quickly approaching. The committee will accept nominations through Friday, March 15, said committee member Ben Phlegar.
Candidates can be nominated in one or more of the following four categories — Student Athletes (male and female), Coaches and Administrators, Teams, and Community Members (who have made a significant impact on Charlotte High School athletics). Phlegar said all nominations will remain on file for five years, and will be considered for induction each of those years.
“You don’t have to nominate the same person each year,” Phlegar explained. “Though multiple nominations received for the same people, or team, are a good indication of the community’s recognition of certain candidates.”
The inaugural class included 26 inductees. Phlegar said the number for each class will be determined on an annual basis, though he said he doesn’t expect quite that many.
“We certainly have a number of individuals in particular that are worthy,” Phlegar said. “But, we’re looking at the long-game as well.”
Nominations for the 2019 class have come in much slower this year, and Phlegar said the committee is hoping to receive several more by the March 15 deadline. To make a nomination, visit charlottenet.org and find Athletic Hall of Fame under the Athletics tab. There you can fill out the application. Applications are also available in the athletic office at Charlotte High School.
The announcement of the Class of 2019 inductees will be made during the Charlotte Athletic Booster Club’s Annual Reverse Raffle, scheduled for May 4 this year. Phlegar said the committee would like to thank the Booster Club for its continued support of the Hall of Fame project, which has been funded thus far through donations, as well as seed money from the Booster Club.
Donations to the Charlotte Athletic Hall of Fame can be made through the Charlotte High School Athletic Boosters.
