The Bellevue High School varsity football team showed what it is capable when it puts all the pieces together at the same time. The Broncos amassed more than 700 yards of total offense, earning their first road win of the season, in a 46-7 victory over North Adams Jerome on Friday, Sept. 27.
Senior Tyler Lane set the tone early for the Broncos, scoring on an 80-yard touchdown run on the second play from scrimmage. Lane finished the game with 271 yards rushing and four touchdowns on just six carries.
“We played one of our best games of the year,” said sixth year coach Doug Blattner. “It seemed like everybody did their job. North Adams, in the past, has played us very tough so we knew we had give everything on every play and had to jump on them early.”
Blattner said the offensive line blocking and perimeter blocking was as good as the team has had this year. The line paved the way for 630 yards on the ground. Junior Darrin Sommers carried 15 times for 152 yards. Freshmen Dylan Lesh and Danny Pluff each picked up more than 50 yards rushing, finishing with 55 and 61 yards respectively.
The Broncos also forced four turnovers, including two interceptions by from Sommers. Cole Madry and Noah Briggs led the way with seven tackles each. Lane, Cody Rauschenberger and Kyle Fletcher each had six tackles.
“Our defense has been playing better than I expected,” Blattner said. “This is most likely the most aggressive defense I have had here at Bellevue. My defensive coordinator Jake Casey has done an outstanding job preparing us for different formations we see each week.”
The Broncos prepared for Homecoming this week and will take on Camden-Frontier (1-4) on Friday, Oct. 4 at Frankenstein Stadium.
“These seniors have never lost a homecoming game, so we are taking that motivation going into this week,” Blattner said. “We know Camden will play us hard. They are a young team and they seem to be getting better each week. We have to prepare each game like it is a playoff game for the rest of the season.”
The win over North Adams Jerome improves Bellevue to 3-2 on the season.
