9-1-1 Dispatcher Kelley Antcliff from the Eaton County Central Dispatch Authority is being recognized for her outstanding efforts to aid a citizen in need using Smart911, the County’s enhanced 9- 1-1 service.
Eaton County 9-1-1 Director April Heinze presented Antcliff with the SmartSave Award — a decoration created by Smart911 to honor 9-1-1 dispatchers for their dedication and excellence while responding to a citizen emergency.
On May 30, 2016, Antcliff received a 9-1-1 call from a woman concerned for her daughter’s friend, Melanie (an alias name), whom admitted to the woman’s daughter via text that her mother was being beaten. After retrieving Melanie’s mobile phone number from the woman, Antcliff immediately initiated a text conversation with the 11-year-old using the Smart9l1 Chat feature of Smart9l1. Melanie quickly responded and confirmed that her mother was being abused by her boyfriend and is badly injured.
Antcliff made sure Melanie was hidden in a safe place and continued to gather information for the responding officers. Upon arrival, Deputies heard screaming from inside the home and forced entry to find Melanie’s mother bleeding from the head. Emergency Medical Services dispatched and the male subject was taken into custody.
“This particular case was very sensitive,” Heinze said. “We had a child concerned for her mother’s life, but was too frightened to speak on the phone with the 9-1-1 call taker. Between Supervisor Antcliff’s quick thinking and the tools provided by Smart911, we were able to communicate with the child without exposing her whereabouts in the home and putting her safety at risk.”
Smart911 is a national service available to all residents and travelers in Eaton County. It provides the option to create a free Safety Profile for one’s household, including any information they want 9-1-1 and first responders to have in the event of an emergency. The profile created will immediately display on a 9-1-1dispatcher’s screen should the individual then make an emergency call.
Residents are encouraged to create a free Safety Profile at Smart911.com. All information is kept private and secure, and only becomes available to emergency responders when 9-1- 1 is dialed.
