Their involvement in the Charlotte community extends much farther than their downtown store, The Ski Loft. Doug and Nola Buck have made it a regular practice to be active in a number of local service organizations in the community as well as on board with many projects. For their efforts over the years, Charlotte Chamber of Commerce past president, Bryan Myrkle presented Doug and Nola with the 2013 Chamber of Commerce President’s Award during the annual Awards Dinner on Jan. 23.
The President’s Award is the highest honor bestowed upon a businesses or individual that the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce can give. It is selected annually by the chamber president to recognize a business, individual or organization that has made a significant contribution to the Charlotte community’s quality of life.
“I can tell you if you look back over the list of previous winners, it’s really a who’s who of Charlotte, a list of folks who have really helped make this a great place to live,” Myrkle said. “This year’s winners really exemplify that spirit.”
Myrkle said Doug and Nola serve as a shining example of what it means to be engaged citizens and dedicated local business owners. The couple has owned The Ski Loft for decades, but have really been a force in making sure downtown Charlotte is successful.
“They have served as mentors for other local small business owners and have done their part as citizens by serving in numerous community boards and commissions,” Myrkle said.
The Bucks plan to retire at the end of the year.
