The Eaton Rapids Fire Department is excited to celebrate its 150th anniversary on September 28, 2024. This milestone event will feature fun activities for the whole family, including a Bucket Brigade 5K run/walk, a parade of fire engines, the Fire in the Hole Corn Hole tournament, bounce houses, and much more. Neighboring townships are joining in to make the celebration even more special. The fire department at 101 Line Street will host an open house and serve hotdogs throughout the day.
Founded in 1874, the Eaton Rapids Fire Department was established after several major fires devastated the town, including one that destroyed many of the downtown businesses.
The first fire hall was a small barn on East Knight Street, next to the river. Initially starting with ten men, the department quickly expanded to a 30-man team. Their first significant piece of firefighting equipment was a steam engine named “Little Giant”.
The Eaton Rapids Fire Department also has a rich history of family involvement. Many firefighters have served for years, often alongside other family members. The Freer family has a long-standing legacy with the department. Richard “Dick” Freer served as Chief from October 1974 to October 1999, and the tradition continued with Kim, Robin, and Jason Freer. The Locke and Oliver families also have strong fire-fighting family traditions within the ERFD.
Fire Chief Roger McNutt has been leading the department since 1999. The department has 15 firefighters.
To mark this special occasion, limited edition 150th anniversary stoneware mugs featuring the department’s insignias will be available to purchase.
