Brett Myers found it interesting to be sitting on the other side of the table for once. Having started his professional career as a reporter for a small newspaper in Indiana, Myers found himself answering, not asking the questions Wednesday, June 3.
Becoming a pastor wasn’t part of his life plans … at least, not early on. Having spent three years in the newspaper industry following graduation from Iowa State University, Myers found himself at a professional crossroads of sorts — move on to a bigger paper in a bigger city or take his career in an entirely different direction.
“This is ultimately what God wanted,” Myers said of his decision to go to seminary school and become a pastor.
The decision brought he and his family to Olivet in 2014 when he was named Pastor of Ainger Bible Church. The congregation will celebrate Sunday, June 7 his one-year anniversary as well the impending arrival of his and wife, Sarah’s fourth child.
“They are a bunch of loving people,” Myers said of his new congregation. “We were really accepted right away. They’ve made us feel at home.”
Myers gave his first official sermon as the new Pastor of Ainger Bible Church on June 1, 2014. He said much of the first year was spent really getting to know his congregation and his new community. Born in Clinton, Iowa, Myers spent most of his life in Indiana. Sarah’s parents, however, live in Tekonsha, which means the family’s move to Michigan allows them and their children, Ellie, 7, Caleb, 5, and Isaac, 3, to now be closer to her family.
Moving forward, Myers said he looks forward to continuing to get to know and growing the congregation at Ainger Bible Church. Sunday School begins at 9:45 a.m. with the main services beginning at 11 a.m. Myers said his sermons often tie Bible text together with everyday life situations.
